Survey Of Unemployment Situation In China'S Textile Industry: Left Behind Migrant Workers Feel Difficult

Unemployed Farmers In China'S Textile Industry

Many small textile enterprises can be seen in Shengze. Most of them have only thirty or forty machines, and only ten or twenty people. For these enterprises, most of them are in a state of hard support. Some enterprises stop for a period of time, and some even increase their inventory even in production. The white cloth stacked in the workshop has begun to become moldy and green.

The textile industry in Shengze is going through the cold winter. The living conditions of the migrant workers are very sad. Some of the migrant workers who have no experience in the textile mill are almost impossible to find a satisfactory job. They can not keep on leaving, but some workers are coming in gradually, and they will continue to work hard.

This year, under the influence of various unfavorable factors at home and abroad, China's economy is facing a major test. Especially China's textile industry has been the most affected. Once there were analysts who believe that 1/3 of Chinese textile enterprises will go bankrupt, and about about 4000000 of them will be laid off. Is this happening?

If it does not appear now, will it happen in the future?

Recently, our reporter Sun Jing arrived at the Shengze town of Wujiang, Jiangsu, China's silk capital, to investigate the laid-off workers there.

The small cities and towns in Jiangsu, Shengze, the capital of the silk capital, are experiencing difficulties.

Shengze is a town in southern Jiangsu, but even more prosperous than some cities in the north. Such prosperity comes from the title of "China silk capital" in Shengze. These shops are located in Shengze's Oriental silk market. The market was built 22 years ago, and now it has gathered more than 5000 shops from all over the country, known as China's first cloth market. In November 24, 2007, the Ministry of Commerce, the National Textile Industry Association, the Jiangsu economic and Trade Commission and the Wujiang Municipal People's government began to jointly launch the China Shengze silk chemical fiber index, which is a barometer of Shengze's economy.

Yan Youming, director of the China Eastern Silk Market Management Committee, said: "from the largest commodity in the Eastern Silk Market, that is, a price index of chemical fiber products and the prosperity index of our market, and the index of prosperity of our chemical fiber, the index of these three categories has shown a downward trend throughout the past six months, and the rate of decline is still relatively large."

At present, there are more than 2400 large and small textile enterprises in Shengze town. They are distributed in more than 30 villages in Shengze town and surrounding areas. These enterprises have accepted 250 thousand migrant workers from all over the country. When the textile enterprises are declining, what are their destinies?

Reporter: "the Hong'an village is only 5 kilometers away from the heart of Shengze Town, but the scene is quite different from that in the town. It can see textile enterprises everywhere. There are lots of rented houses around these textile enterprises. Many migrant workers live here. Before we came to Shengze, we met a migrant worker from Anhui, Pan Shengchun, who said we had come to his home today to see it."

On both sides of the road, most of these low houses are migrant workers.

Reporter: "the front is Laopan's home. In this courtyard, there are many migrant workers like Laopan."

Today, Mr. Pan is on the night shift. His wife Zhang Xianrong is just on the night shift of the day before. Two people are just at home. In the whole August, there are not enough time for two people to go to work.

Pan Shengchun: "I stopped for more than a week this month."

Zhang Xianrong: "in August basically did not do several classes, it has been done for a few days, and then 3 made a day, the rest of the time is basically stopped, and in July only 8 classes."

Pan Sheng Chun and his 18 year old son were squeezed into a room less than 15 square meters. Although life was very inconvenient, they did not want to pay 170 yuan to rent another room. They didn't earn 170 yuan a month.

Pan Shengchun: "a class is 85 yuan, so if it stops one class, I will be 85 less."

Under normal circumstances, Pan Shengchun has 20 classes a month, that is, 12 hours of work and 24 hours of rest. He takes 1700 yuan, but in August he can get 1200 yuan for most of his stoppage. Zhang Xianrong can only get 8 or 900 yuan this month. The income of 2000 yuan makes their life more and more difficult. In addition to the necessities of life, the family is simply not too simple. For them, the business boom is their only hope. But in fact, most enterprises are very nervous now.

An enterprise worker: "it is good not to lose money now, that is to increase inventory and not sell it."

Reporter: "in Shengze can see a lot of small textile enterprises, their scale is mostly only thirty or forty machines, the staff is only ten or twenty people, for these enterprises, most of them are in a state of support, some enterprises are to stop for a period of time, and some even in production is just increasing inventory, like the enterprise behind me, according to the local people said, after the Spring Festival, there is no production, for these enterprises, who can hold up until tomorrow, everyone has no bottom."
