UK Retail Sales Decline In December
In December, retail sales in the UK decreased by 3.3% compared with December 2007, and overall sales decreased by 1.4%. The two data in December are the worst data since the survey began 14 years ago, which is the worst sales in December.
Only sales of food and shoes grew year-on-year, but sales of shoes were also increasing. Sales of clothing, furniture and large household products showed a downward trend compared with the same period last year.
The sales environment was very difficult in the first half of December. Christmas shopping time is later than usual: there are more shopping days on Christmas week this year, shoppers are waiting for discount sales and early clearance sale.
Non food non store sales increased by 30% in December compared with the same period last year. 16.6% higher than in November, people are more convinced that Christmas online shopping, several stores postponed the deadline for orders, later than last Christmas order deadline.
Stephen Robertson, President of the British Retail Association, said the figures were really bad. Some retailers did better than other retailers, and sales in the second half of 12 were better than the first half of the month. But in general, only food sales have increased, but this is the slowest increase since last March.
