Lithium Battery Standards Will Be Introduced To Avoid Recall Events

2006/9/13 0:00:00 239

In order to get rid of the repeated battery recall crisis, 9 manufacturers are scheduled to meet next Wednesday (September 13th) to set up a unified standard for lithium-ion batteries.

Apple, DELL, HP, IBM Lenovo, NOKIA and other manufacturers will set standards for batteries under the strong sponsorship of IPC.

To avoid the repetition of the recall of millions of apple and DELL laptop batteries in August, these manufacturers will first set out how to test whether there are impurities in lithium ion batteries.

John Grosso, chairman of the IPC OEM Identification Committee, said, "it's never too late to make up for it."

(Grosso is also the director of DELL engineering and quality department.

)

Although the scope of the manufacturers participating in this standard is not yet determined, Grosso hopes that the participants can work out a current overload test called Delta (Greek fourth letter delta).

The test will compare an unused battery with a battery tested after thermal stress.

If the current overload of the two batteries is too large, the next test will be carried out.

The purpose of this test is to identify whether there are too many impurities in the battery.

In SONY's batteries, these impurities are the hidden danger of the fire of the early farm workers and peasants.

Grosso said, "now every manufacturer has its own standard.

You can spend the whole day trying to understand how a manufacturer can implement this test. "

The IPC Committee has a preliminary standard for the number of impurities contained in the battery, but it is hoped that the experts will be examined before publication.

Grosso says these manufacturers can also set standards for other details of battery manufacturing processes.

Although today's battery designs are varied, Grosso says it will be possible to form detailed standards for batteries and their interfaces.

The reason why NOKIA is invited to participate in the formulation of standards is that it is not only used by laptop batteries, but also for mobile phones and other mobile systems that use lithium-ion batteries.

Grosso expressed the hope that the standard would have the widest adaptation.

Although almost all of the invited manufacturers came from the notebook industry, Grosso said it wanted other companies to join.

He said, "many manufacturers are hesitant.

They want to know how much IPC knows about the battery, and so on and so on after the first meeting to see what will happen, and then make a decision.

The organization's standard is about computer fans, which took 7 months to spend 20000 dollars to complete.

But developing a battery standard will cost more manpower and resources.

The standard will refer to the existing IEEE1725 mobile phone battery standards and IEEE1625 battery pack design standards.
