Australian Wool Exports Face Risks Of Being Boycotted

2008/11/24 0:00:00 59

Because Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) has abandoned the promise of cutting sheep's wrinkle skin before 2010, the country's annual export of 2 billion 500 million Australian dollars is facing the risk of boycott by international buyers.

Australian wool supply accounts for 85% of the world's apparel and decorative wool market.

The way to cut sheep's tail skin is to prevent destructive maggots from disturbing.

The Commonwealth of Australia Institute of scientific and industrial research estimates that if this is stopped, 3 million sheep will die of maggots every year.

The US and European retailers and humane animal organizations, including Abercrombie&Fitch, said that if AWI failed to comply with its commitments, it would boycott them. The British Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (RSPCA) urged Australian wool producers to fulfill their 2010 promises.

AWI believes that they should be held accountable to the 30 thousand shareholders instead of being responsible to animal activists. It also points out that Australia is not the only country in the world to cut sheep's skin. New Zealand and South Africa are using this technology.
