China logistics and purchasing Federation 4 released the January 2009 China Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI), which was 45.3%, up 4.1 percentage points from last month.

It is understood that manufacturing PMI is a composite index, usually PMI index is above 50%, reflecting the overall economic expansion; less than 50%, reflecting the risk of economic downturn.

From the four important indexes of the new order index, the new export order index, the production index and the purchasing volume index, the textile industry is in the lowest position in 20 industries, the first three indexes are lower than 20%, and the purchasing index is below 30%.

According to the data, industry experts believe that at present, the retail market of Europe, the United States and Japan has been slow-moving, inventory has been overloaded, consumers have substantially reduced their expenditure and budgets on textiles and clothing. If this situation is not changed in a timely manner, the external demand will decline and the duration will be prolonged.

However, Fan Min, editor in chief of textile business week, pointed out that consumption data during the Christmas season reflect that importers and retailers are digesting inventory and returning cash flow to avoid risks.

Fan Min believes that as long as the policy support is stronger and the enterprises should be timely and effective, the competitive comparative advantage of Chinese textile enterprises will still exist, and its ability to receive orders will be greatly improved. If the situation is as expected, China's textile industry in 2009 is expected to suppress a sharp decline in exports.
