India Congress said today that because of the high per hectare yield, India's Bt transgenic cotton planting area has increased from 29000 hectares in to 8 million hectares in 2009-10.

Thomas, Minister of national food and agriculture, said that the Bt cotton area increased from 29000 hectares in 2002-03 to 8 million hectares in 2009-10.

The minister said that Bt cotton increased the yield per hectare by 31%. Pesticides Usage decreased by 39%.

He said: "the average yield of Bt transgenic cotton is 300 kg per hectare in 2001-02, and increased to 560 kg per hectare in 2007-08."

The minister said that better income factors have been identified, including elite germplasm, better resistance to cotton bollworm, reducing pests and diseases, and further increasing yields per hectare.

The total output of cotton in India is estimated at 22 million 300 thousand packets, 170 kilos per pack.

On Monday, cotton trading prices in the western India spot market were strong, traders said that the supply of good quality cotton was exhausted, and the cotton delivered at a high price was sold to support the market.

Gujarat's S - 6 cotton trade price is 29800-30300 rupees / candy, and V-797 cotton trading price is 21300-21600 rupee / candy. The price of S-6 cotton delivered in November and December was 30200-30500 rupees and 29800-30300 rupees respectively.
