So how can we do brainstorming? What is the criterion for success in brainstorming? Joseph Brezel, North Carolina State University, Tina Carpenter of University of Georgia and Gregory Jenkins of Virginia Tech studied together.


The researchers chose auditors of accounting firms as research subjects. They wanted to explore the difference between brainstorming and the impact of different processes on the final decision quality when auditors reveal the fraudulent practices of enterprises, such as forging financial statements.


The researchers received support from four big accounting firms and an international auditor, and investigated 179 partners, directors, senior managers and office managers.

The subjects need to describe in detail the latest brainstorming and explain the effect of brainstorming.

Through investigation and previous literature analysis, the researchers extracted three indicators to measure the quality of brainstorming: (1) diversity of personnel and openness of personnel communication; 2. Composition and timing of meetings; 3. Participation level of team members.

At the same time, they also list some of the requirements for successful brainstorming: participation of experts from various fields, everyone's Frank acceptance of others' opinions, adequate preparation before the meeting, use of agenda and checklist to keep the meeting from being broken.


Researchers also found that in these most famous accounting firms, high quality brainstorming does make the decision more reliable, while low quality brainstorming tends to reduce audit accuracy.

In addition, a key and enlightened organizer is the best person to chair the meeting. The organizers need three abilities: first, the organizers need to create a good atmosphere and control the situation.

Researchers found that if the organizer failed to do this, it would usually lead to more than 40% of the time in the discussion without focus. Second, organizers need to put forward a guiding view to lock in the scope of discussion, otherwise participants will not be able to talk about it; third, the organizer should pay equal attention to the opinions of all people, otherwise, brainstorming will become a game for a few people, and it will not play its due role.
