He assured that if the domestic silk farmers were adversely affected by the government's decision to cut tariffs on imported raw silk by 25%, the government would intervene.
However, Karnataka's sericultural farmers believe that the reason why the cocoon price has dropped sharply is that the government lowered the import tariff of raw silk from 30% to 5% in the 2011-12 budget.
The minister said that when the government decided to substantially cut import tariffs, demand supply imbalance and raw silk users were facing a shortage of raw silk.
If the domestic sericultural farmers are now being adversely affected, the government will intervene.
