The TPP agreement was reached after negotiations between nine countries in the Pacific Rim (Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Peru and the United States) at the November 2011 Honolulu summit of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

The treaty is dubbed a variety of twenty-first Century trade agreements and beyond the ordinary free trade agreement, because it covers areas usually not in all trade agreements.

TPP includes government procurement, and the adoption of environmental, labour and intelligence standards, which are generally part of a country's domestic policy.

However, Indonesia has expressed reluctance to join.

Speaking of development, Ade Sudrajat, President of the Indonesian textile association (API), said that TPP may be beneficial to Indonesia's exporters of textiles and clothing, because TPP will reduce tariffs and expand market access for us.

Partnership will also be beneficial. Unlike the China ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, partnership will link Indonesia with its export destinations.

He explained that the China ASEAN free trade agreement came into force in January 2010, causing Indonesia goods to compete directly with Chinese products.

In comparison, the TPP agreement has proved that it has a good complementary effect on Indonesia manufacturing.
