It is a medium rising city located on the western edge of Chaoshan Plain in the southeastern part of China's Guangdong province. It is the only pilot city of traditional Chinese medicine in China and the economic zone of the west side of the Straits.

In 1988, it was approved by the State Council as an open coastal economic zone.

It owns the largest land port in Guangdong Province, and now it is a county-level city with the power of economic management in prefecture level cities. It is also the highest voice in Guangdong province.

Puning is also a famous hometown of overseas Chinese, the old revolutionary base area of the Communist Party of China.

In December 2002, Puning became the first "textile base city of China" with Dongguan and Zhongshan.

Puning is the largest distributing center for clothing, tobacco, tea, fruit and textiles in eastern Guangdong. It is the largest Chinese herbal medicine base in Southern China. It once enjoyed the reputation of not being able to get enough medicine in Puning.

The new car market is the largest freight station in eastern Guangdong, and the largest passenger pport terminal in eastern Guangdong.

Puning is the largest shirt producing base in the country. It produces 300 million shirts annually and produces 1 billion 300 million kinds of garments each year.

Textile, clothing and medicine are the two pillar industries in the region.

Puning is also the first pilot city of "famous Chinese medicine city" and the first "China textile base city".

The largest land port in eastern Guangdong has obvious economic extroversion. The third industry, which is dominated by commerce and trade, has always played an important role in the local economy.
