A study released recently by the India Federation of industry and Commerce (FICCI) said that during the 1995-2007 years, India's exports of textiles and clothing to the United States and the EU lagged behind those of China, Vietnam, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The report said that the proportion of India's textile and clothing exports to the EU in the 25 EU countries' textile and apparel imports decreased from 7.9% in 1995 to 7.5% in 2007, while Vietnam's share of EU textile and clothing exports increased from 0.8% to 1.6%. Bangladesh's ranking of EU textile and clothing exports also rose to fourth.

India's exports of textiles and clothing to the United States accounted for 1.6% of the total global textile and clothing imports in 1995-2007 years, while Vietnam's share of textiles and clothing exports to the United States increased from 0.04% to 4.7%, while China increased from 11% to 33.5%.

In terms of export volume, Pakistan was the second largest importer of textiles and clothing in 2007, and India ranked fourth.

Vietnam's exports to the United States increased from $17 million in 1995 to $4 billion 335 million in 2007, which is higher than India's $3 billion 200 million exports to the US in 2007.
