Despite the surface boom in the shoe market in recent two years, Russia's demand for shoes is far behind that of European countries and the United States.
The latest figures show that the average Russian buys 1.4 pairs of shoes a year, while Europeans buy 4.5 pairs a year, while the average American buys 6.5 pairs each year.
In 2009, Russia made 57 million 800 thousand pairs of shoes, up 3.9% from the 55 million 700 thousand pairs in 2008.
The Krasnodar borderland company is the largest producer of shoes in Russia, which occupies 17% of the total output of Russian shoes in 2009.
In 2009, Russia imported 222 million 100 thousand pairs of shoes from abroad, down 22.3% from 285 million 800 thousand pairs in 2008.
The average contract price for each pair of shoes is about $10 or 290 rubles.
Among them, shoes imported from China amounted to 83%.
Compared with the first quarter of 2009, the shoe market in Russia in the first quarter of 2010 showed a growth of 5-10% in real terms, and increased by 15-20% in value terms.
Insiders say Russian demand for shoes is recovering and prices are rising.
