Exhibition Shooting Skills

For exhibition photography, whether professional media or Internet media, there are few articles on photography skills in this area.

The reason for this is that the shooting is very simple. There is no difference between the shooting and the street sweeping. So the technical content is relatively low, so long as we press the shutter, but is this really the case?

Equipment preparation


The demand for equipment is relatively high.

The most important thing is to make use of the auto show.

In addition, due to the difference between the ability of noise control and digital SLR cameras, the fineness of the screen will obviously decrease when the ISO shutter is needed to ensure the safety shutter.


If you take pictures of art exhibitions, most of them are static objects, so the gap between DSLR and consumer digital cameras is not so obvious, but they require higher quality and shooting skills. For example, taking some products that are covered by glass or photographing pictures hanging on the wall, the matching of digital SLR cameras and headers is the most appropriate. On the one hand, there are large aperture guards, and on the other hand, lens distortion and color restoration can reach the best level.

In consumer digital cameras, Canon G7, Nikon P5000 and Ricoh GR-D are also very good choices.


Many photographers will consider taking three tripod, but I find it inappropriate.

On the one hand, the three foot frame is too big to carry; on the other hand, when the three legs are in use, they need enough space to support it, but in such a crowded situation at the exhibition, they will not give you the chance to play leisurely at all. So choosing a tripod that is portable and more practical is more appropriate. The supporting force of the tripod can ensure the stability of the shooting picture.


If you want to take pictures of art exhibitions, flash bulbs can never be used. Most of the exhibits are usually placed on display.

Glass display cabinet

Inside, when the flashing light flashes, the reflection of glass will form a white flower on the surface of the glass, and many exhibitions prohibit the use of flash.

But here, I still remember to remind you not to forget to bring CPL lenses, which can effectively reduce or eliminate the reflection of glass surface, so that when we are shooting, we will not be disturbed by reflected light.


Familiar with environment


Familiarity with the environment is actually doing homework ahead of time.


For art exhibitions, we need to know something about the exhibits, especially its historical background. This helps us to make trade-offs in the selection of scenery and composition, dig out the charm of details, and highlight the temperament of the items.


Photography skills (works of Art)


The exhibition of art shows more attention to detail and photography skills.

Personally, I think the most important thing is the use of light.

Ordinary art exhibitions are usually put on the table, in front of a isolation column. We can control the focal distance based on the power of the artificial lighting and the distance from the light source, and choose different light spots.

Of course, the indoor light is very dark. Because many times it is not allowed to turn on the flash, it is necessary to stabilize the camera through a single tripod. As I have said before, there is no repetition here.


The above situation is relatively simple, but more often than not, the objects we photographed are placed in the glass display cabinets, and the top of them will have an atmosphere of spotlight. The first difficulty is to eliminate the glare of the glass. If I want to take the near perfect effect, I will use the CPL mirror as part of the preparation.

In addition, ingenious use of the relationship between incident angle and reflection angle can avoid some reflected light.

The second difficulty is photometry. Strong contrast between light and shade and light and shadow can highlight the visual effect of the artwork. The choice of light metering is very accurate, but it is also difficult to control.

If the central focus metering mode is chosen, the effect is similar, but the operation is simpler.

In addition, we need to make adjustments through exposure compensation when there is a big contrast between the exhibits and the background light.


It is simpler to solve the white balance problem, because the color temperature of the light source is basically uniform. With the advantage of digital camera, the white balance mode can be adjusted through the camera preset white balance mode.

Even if it is inaccurate, it can be deleted.


In terms of lens focus control and angle selection, it is best to choose to look at it. Especially when shooting pictures and paintings, you must not use the wide-angle shooting of the lens. Because most cameras are distorted when they are pulled to the wide corners, and we shoot indoors. In order to improve the shutter speed, the aperture will often be the biggest, so the dark corner will also appear, which will seriously damage the authenticity of the picture.

It is suggested that the focal length of lens should be controlled between 50-90mm.
