South Africa Is About To Cancel Textile Import Quotas

2008/12/8 0:00:00 10248

South Africa

In December 2nd, Tshediso Matona, Minister of trade and industry in South Africa, said that the textile import quota successfully protected the South African textile industry from the influence of Chinese textile competition. However, new quota restrictions will no longer be implemented from 2009.

Mr Matona said that there was no new quota due to the fact that there was no application for the extension of quotas. However, if there is an extension of the quota application, the Ministry of trade and industry of South Africa will make a decision before the end of the month.

Matona said that domestic textile industry quotas did reduce imports from China.

In 2007, at the request of the Federation of South African textile and garment workers, South Africa imposed quota quotas on textiles from China, but the clothing industry believes that this has raised the price of fabrics.
