Analysts said that the output of global steel companies in 2009 will be reduced by at least 10%. This is probably the largest year-on-year decline in more than 60 years.

The steel industry is one of the biggest hit by this year's financial turmoil. Since mid 2008, the share price of many steel groups has fallen by more than 2/3.
Companies such as construction, automobiles and white goods industries suddenly cut orders in September and October this year. Many of the steel producers including LakshmiMittal, ArcelorMittal, Severstal and Severstal of India's Tata Steel (TataSteel) have slashed production.
