Malian Government Will Support Cotton Pillar Industries
It was reported that at the meeting held in Bamako last week, the China and West Africa cotton promotion program decided to invest 20 billion francs to Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali and Chad. The aim is to increase the output of cotton in 2008-2009 by means of pformation, utilization of new technologies of integrated management and increase of cotton yield per unit area, and ensuring the increase of cotton farmers' income.
In May last year, the organization allocated 164 million West illegal Lang to Mali textile development company for training 25 thousand cotton farmers and 289 cotton business management cadres, and achieving the target of 1200 kilograms per unit area in 178 ha demonstration field.
Cotton cultivation is one of Mali's pillar industries. In the normal year of development, cotton income can be up to 85 billion to 123 billion francs (170 million to 246 million US dollars), accounting for 8% of GDP. The annual tax payment to the government is 50 to 10 billion West illegal Lang, with a population of over 3 million. Increasing cotton production and increasing cotton farmers' income is crucial to economic and social development in Mali.
